Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has admitted for the first time in court documents that its vaccine against COVID-19 can cause “rare side effects”. In particular, it is about thrombosis.
This could pave the way for multi-million dollar legal payouts, The Telegraph reports.
The victims and their relatives filed a class-action lawsuit against AstraZeneca. They claim that the vaccine, developed jointly with the University of Oxford, has caused deaths and serious consequences in dozens of cases.
The first lawsuit was filed last year by Jamie Scott, a father of two who was left with a chronic brain injury after suffering a blood clot and a brain hemorrhage. He received the vaccine in April 2021.
AstraZeneca is contesting the claims, but admitted in a document filed with the High Court in February that its COVID-19 vaccine “may in very rare cases cause TTS”. However, it is not known exactly how.
TTS is a syndrome of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia. It causes the formation of blood clots and a decrease in the level of platelets in the blood.
The link between the vaccine and a new disease called vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia syndrome (VITT) was first discovered in March 2021. The plaintiffs’ lawyers argue that it is a variant of TTS, although AstraZeneca does not appear to recognize the term.
The pharmaceutical company noted that in April 2021, information about the vaccine was updated, adding the phrase that “the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine can in very rare cases trigger” TTS.
The World Health Organization also said the vaccine was “safe and effective for all people over the age of 18” and that the side effects that prompted the lawsuit were “very rare.”
A total of 51 applications against AstraZeneca were submitted to the High Court. The victims and their relatives are seeking up to 100 million pounds (about $125 million) in damages.
We will remind you that scientists have discovered two new adverse reactions from the vaccine against COVID-19 – a neurological disorder and inflammation of the spinal cord.
